Mission: The Woodburn After School Club provides afterschool enrichment and academic opportunities for 4 Elementary, 2 Middle and 1 High School Campus in Woodburn in order to keep kids safe, provide academic support, access to needed resources and promote a positive school and community image.
WSD has a tricultural and trilingual student body of 5436 students of whom 73% are Latino, 16% Caucasian, and 11% Russian. Sponsored by WSD, the Woodburn After School Club (WASC) started operations in April 2004 with Federal funding from a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant. Each year WASC serves 25% of Woodburn’s students, a total of 1,320: 370 elementary students, 350 middle school students and 600 high school students.
Consultant Role (2009-present): Crafted a funding proposal that secured a $2.09 million 21st Century Community Learning Center grant from the Oregon Department of Education and a 2nd grant to support STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) services for the Woodburn After School Club (WASC). Continued consulting support is dedicated to securing grant funding that will sustain WASC in future years.
“Bill helped us shape some general program ideas into a compelling proposal that won a major grant despite stiff competition. He understands youth development, knows how funders think and quickly learned unique aspects of our multicultural community. We keep securing Bill’s help when we seek grant support.”
— Karen Armstrong, WASC Program Director
